Pay As You Go Answering Service UK 2026: Per-Call Prices, Providers and When It Stops Being Cheap
Everything you need to choose a pay as you go answering service in the UK: which providers genuinely bill per call, what they charge, the minimum-spend clauses that quietly turn PAYG into a subscription, and the monthly call volume at which a flat plan becomes the cheaper option.
How We Assessed UK Pay As You Go Answering Services
"Pay as you go" is used loosely in this market. Some providers mean it literally: no monthly fee, a charge per answered call, stop any time. Others mean a monthly platform fee plus per-call charges, or a bundle with a low minimum that they describe as PAYG. We checked each provider's terms for four things.
- 1. Is there a monthly minimum? A true PAYG plan bills zero in a month with zero calls. Several "PAYG" plans carry a £10 to £30 minimum, which is a subscription with extra steps.
- 2. What exactly is a call? Some providers charge for every connected call including wrong numbers and sales calls; the better ones let you exclude nuisance calls or only bill calls where a message was taken.
- 3. What is excluded from the per-call price? Transfers, out-of-hours, SMS delivery and diary bookings are commonly extra.
- 4. Can you actually leave? PAYG should mean no notice period. We checked for 30-day and 90-day notice clauses.
Pay As You Go Answering Service UK at a Glance
A pay as you go answering service in the UK charges £0.99 to £2.50 per answered call with no or low monthly fee. Answer4u and Answer both start at £0.99 a call; JAM bills per minute from £0.90; Face For Business bills per second. PAYG is the cheapest option under about 40 calls a month and the most expensive above about 100. Watch for minimum monthly spend, per-transfer charges and out-of-hours uplifts.
- £0.99-£2.50 — per answered call
- £0.90/min — JAM's per-minute alternative
- ~40 calls/mo — where a flat plan becomes cheaper
- £10-£30 — typical minimum spend on "PAYG" plans
What Pay As You Go Means in Answering Services
There are three billing structures sold under the PAYG label, and only the first is what most people mean by it.
True per-call
No monthly fee. Each answered call is billed at a fixed rate, usually £0.99 to £2.50. Zero calls, zero bill. Answer4u and Answer are the clearest UK examples at £0.99 a call.
Per-minute or per-second
No bundle, but you pay for operator time rather than calls: JAM from £0.90 a minute, Face For Business per second. Cheaper than per-call for short calls, dearer for long ones.
Platform fee plus per-call
A monthly fee of £10 to £30 keeps the account open, then calls are charged on top. Common at Pocket Receptionist-style budget bureaus. Predictable, but not PAYG in a quiet month.
A fourth thing sometimes sold as PAYG is a prepaid credit bundle: buy 50 calls up front, use them whenever. It is PAYG in spirit, but check whether the credits expire; many do at 90 days.

| JAM | £0.90/min | Account fee applies | Yes | Billed as minutes | Per minute, not per call; bespoke scripting; est. 1977 |
| Face For Business | £24.50/mo + per second | £24.50 | Yes | Extra | Per-second billing is the fairest of the time-based models |
| ReceptionHQ | £20/mo + per call/min | £20 | Yes | Extra | Flexible: choose per call or per minute on the same account |
| Pocket Receptionist | £24.99/mo + per call | £24.99 | Office hours | Extra | Budget bureau; out of hours not included at entry |
| Team-Connect | Not PAYG: £9.99-£199.99/mo | Monthly plan | Yes | Included in plan minutes | Flat plan, no contract, no per-call charge; the alternative to PAYG rather than a PAYG option |
Moneypenny, AnswerConnect, alldayPA, Bizik and Connect Comms do not offer a pay as you go option at the time of writing; all are monthly bundle or quote-based.
When Pay As You Go Is Cheaper, and When It Is Not
The maths is simple once you know your call count. At £1.20 a call, the mid-point of UK per-call pricing:
| Calls per month | PAYG at £1.20/call | Human bundle (£30 + overage) | Team-Connect Lite £19.99 + packs | Team-Connect Pro £79.99 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | £12 | £30 | £19.99 | £79.99 |
| 25 | £30 | £30 | £19.99 + £34.99 pack = £55 | £79.99 |
| 40 | £48 | £30 | £55 | £79.99 |
| 75 | £90 | £47 | £120 | £79.99 |
| 150 | £180 | £129 | Pro is cheaper | £79.99 |
| 300 | £360 | £294 | Pro is cheaper | £79.99 + pack, ~£115 |
Under about 25 calls a month, PAYG is the cheapest thing on the market and nothing else comes close. Between 25 and 75 it is a toss-up with entry bundles, and the deciding factor is usually out-of-hours cover (PAYG rates often rise after 6pm) and whether you want a person or an AI. Above 75 to 100 calls, PAYG is the most expensive option in the table, and a flat plan wins by a widening margin every month after that.

The Pay As You Go Traps
Six clauses we found in UK PAYG terms that change the sums. None is dishonest; all are easy to miss.
- 1. Minimum monthly spend. A £15 minimum on a 99p-a-call plan means your first 15 calls are effectively pre-paid whether they arrive or not.
- 2. Every connected call counts. Wrong numbers, cold callers and the same customer ringing twice all bill at the full rate unless the provider filters them.
- 3. Out-of-hours rates. Some PAYG plans charge £1.50 to £2.50 for evening and weekend calls against 99p in office hours, or route out-of-hours to voicemail.
- 4. Transfer charges. Patching a caller to your mobile bills the operator's time and sometimes the call leg, on top of the per-call fee.
- 5. Message delivery. A per-SMS or per-email charge for sending you the message the call produced.
- 6. Notice periods. PAYG should mean you can stop tomorrow; we found 30-day notice clauses on plans described as pay as you go.
Who Pay As You Go Suits
Pay as you go is the right choice for a specific kind of business, and it is worth being clear about which.
- Very low, unpredictable volume: a consultant who gets ten calls a month and cannot justify a plan.
- Seasonal businesses that need cover for three months a year and nothing the rest of the time.
- Testing the idea: trying outsourced answering for a month before committing to anything.
- Overflow only: you answer most calls yourself and want a backstop for the ones you miss.
If you are in the first or last group, PAYG from Answer4u or Answer is the honest recommendation and we would rather say so than sell you a plan. If your calls are steady, or a quarter of them arrive out of hours, read on. And if the reason you want PAYG is that you want to try before committing, our free trial guide lists who offers one.
Team-Connect: Not Pay As You Go, and Why
We do not offer per-call pricing. Our plans are flat monthly amounts with a pool of minutes, monthly rolling, no contract and no notice period, which gets you the thing people actually want from PAYG (no lock-in, stop whenever you like) without the thing that makes it expensive (a bill that rises with every call). The trade-off is real: in a month with three calls, a PAYG customer pays £3 and a Lite customer pays £19.99. In a month with 80 calls the positions reverse by a wide margin.
| Team-Connect plan | Monthly | Numbers | Incoming minutes | AI answering minutes | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | £9.99 | 1 | 50 | None: call handling and divert only | A number and basic cover; add AI later |
| Lite | £19.99 | 2 | 250 | 30 | Sole traders with modest call volume |
| Pro | £79.99 | 3 | 750 | 250 | Busy trades, salons and clinics |
| Enterprise | £199.99 | 10 | 1,500 | 750 | Multi-site and high-volume businesses |
All plans are monthly rolling with no contract and no notice period; annual billing saves 25%. The £9.99 Starter plan is number-and-divert only; AI answering starts on Lite at £19.99. AI minute packs from £34.99 for 150 minutes never expire, which is the closest thing we offer to pay as you go: buy a pack once, use it over as many months as you like.
Pay As You Go Answering Service UK — Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a pay as you go answering service in the UK?
Yes. Answer4u and Answer both charge from £0.99 per answered call with no bundle, JAM bills per minute from £0.90, Face For Business bills per second and ReceptionHQ lets you choose per call or per minute. Check each for minimum monthly spend, because some plans described as pay as you go carry a £10 to £30 minimum.
How much is a pay as you go answering service per call?
£0.99 to £2.50 per answered call in the UK, with £0.99 the entry price at Answer4u and Answer. Evening and weekend calls are often charged at a higher rate, and transfers and message delivery can be extra.
Is pay as you go cheaper than a monthly answering service plan?
Under about 25 to 40 calls a month, yes: at £1.20 a call, 25 calls is £30, which matches the cheapest human bundles and beats most AI plans. Above about 75 to 100 calls a month a flat plan is cheaper, and the gap widens with volume.
Does Team-Connect offer pay as you go?
No. Team-Connect bills a flat monthly plan from £9.99 (£19.99 for the plan with AI answering) with no contract and no notice period, so you can stop any month. AI minute packs bought once never expire, which is the closest equivalent to paying as you go.
Do pay as you go answering services charge for wrong numbers and sales calls?
Many charge for every connected call, including nuisance calls. Some let you exclude calls where no message was taken. Ask before signing, because at 99p a call a busy sales-call week is a real cost.
Can I cancel a pay as you go answering service at any time?
Usually, but check the notice clause. Genuine PAYG has no notice period; we found 30-day notice terms on some plans described as pay as you go.
What is a pay per call answering service?
Another name for pay as you go: you are billed a fixed amount for each call the service answers, rather than a monthly bundle or a per-minute rate. £0.99 to £2.50 a call is the UK range.
