How to Build an AI Chat Widget for Your Website in 2 Minutes

Most chat widgets take an afternoon to set up. The Team-Connect AI setup assistant does the same job in about two minutes — and produces a more comprehensive configuration than most humans bother to write. Here is exactly how it works, end to end.

Why an AI chat widget at all?

Your website never sleeps. Visitors land on it at 11pm reading reviews, on Sunday morning comparing prices, and at 4am from a different time zone. A static page can answer none of their questions. A contact form scares most of them off. An AI chat widget bridges the gap — instant, conversational, available 24/7, and cheap enough that even a sole trader can afford it.

Step 1 — Create your Team-Connect account

Head to team-connect.co.uk/signup and create a free account. Pick the Lite plan at £19/month if you want to dip your toes, or jump straight to Growth at £49/month for multilingual replies and a custom personality. There is no contract, no credit card test required, and you can cancel any time from the dashboard.

Step 2 — Open the widget setup screen

Inside the dashboard, go to Website Chat → Widget Setup. You will see nine configuration tabs along the top — Appearance, Business Info, Knowledge, Conversation Flows, Personality, Leads & Alerts, Integrations, Test and Deploy. Don't fill them in by hand. That's what the AI setup assistant is for.

Step 3 — Click the orange "Need help setting up?" bubble

In the bottom-right of the setup screen, an orange bubble reads Need help setting up? Let me build your widget in 2 minutes. Click it. A chat panel slides up with a friendly greeting from the AI setup assistant. This is where the magic happens.

Tip — Have your website URL ready

The setup assistant has a built-in fetch_website tool that scrapes your homepage to pull in services, pricing, hours and contact details automatically. Paste your URL early in the conversation and the AI will do most of the work for you.

Step 4 — Answer the AI's questions

The assistant asks for: your business name and what you do, your industry, your website URL, your phone and email, your operating hours, your top services, a tone preference, your owner mobile for SMS alerts and any booking link you want shared. It asks one or two things at a time so you never feel overwhelmed. The whole interview runs about 90 seconds.

Step 5 — Let the AI generate your config

Once it has enough information, the assistant warns you that the build takes 30 to 60 seconds and runs complete_setup. Under the hood it generates 15 to 25 Q&A pairs tuned to your specific business, 5 to 8 conversation flows with industry-appropriate triggers, escalation keywords like "emergency" or "complaint" that fit your sector, four quick-reply chips for first-time visitors, and a personality that matches your tone choice.

Step 6 — Apply with one click

The AI shows a green summary card: "All set — ready to apply" with two buttons: Apply to widget and Download JSON. Click Apply. Every section in the dashboard fills in automatically. Browse the nine tabs and tweak anything you want — change the bot name, add more Q&As, adjust the greeting, pick a different colour. Everything is editable.

Step 7 — Copy the embed snippet

Go to the Deploy tab. You will see a single line of HTML:

<script async src="https://team-connect.co.uk/widget/v1/embed.js"
        data-tc-widget="wgt_yourKeyHere"></script>

Copy it. Paste it into your website just before the closing </body> tag on every page you want the widget on. Works identically on WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Framer, Ghost, custom Next.js, Astro and plain HTML.

Step 8 — Add more widgets for more sites

Got a second site? A different brand? A client site you manage? You don't need a second subscription. In the widget setup screen, click the + Add widget button at the top of the tab strip. A new widget appears with its own config, personality and inbox. The setup assistant remembers which widget you are currently editing and won't mix them up. The monthly conversation allowance is shared across every widget on your account.

Step 9 — Test it before going live

The Test tab runs a live preview chat against your config. Ask the AI a few questions you expect customers to ask — pricing, hours, common services, refund policy — and see how it responds. If the answer is wrong, head to the Knowledge tab and edit the relevant Q&A pair. Or just ask the setup assistant: "the answer about pricing is wrong, here's what it should say..." — it will update the knowledge for you.

Step 10 — Monitor and take over

Open the Widget Inbox page to see every visitor conversation in real time. Take over any chat with one click — the visitor sees the same thread, the AI steps back, and you reply by name. SMS alerts fire to your mobile when visitors mention escalation keywords. Email alerts arrive when conversations are closed. Nothing falls through the cracks.

That is the whole process

From sign-up to live widget on your homepage: about two minutes if you are quick, five if you take your time. Faster than installing a WordPress plugin. Cheaper than a single hour of a freelance developer. And the AI keeps working at 3am on a Sunday while you sleep.
